A hypothetical period-certain fixed immediate-annuity payment could cover a portion of essentials early in retirement.
WAR CHEST / Sequence / Income Floor
Could a bad start to retirement put my lifetime income at risk?
Test whether a protected income floor could reduce forced selling without sacrificing every dollar of liquid investments or incorrectly treating a doubled rider income base as cash.

Practical Example
MEET PAPA JOE / A FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
The same returns can feel very different in retirement.
Papa Joe is starting withdrawals. He wants to understand how early market losses could affect the money available later, even when the same returns occur in a different order.
$76,510 remains with early losses.
$87,717 remains with reversed returns.
Difference from return order
Sequence sensitivity, not strategy gain. This is one hypothetical comparison, not a promised improvement.

The assumptions
Start $100,000; withdraw $5,000 at each year start. Compare returns −20%, −10%, +10%, +15%, +20% with the reverse order.
The trade-offs
Future returns cannot be reversed by an advisor. Shows exposure only; no income-floor product benefit, cost or guarantee is established.

Both start with $1,000,000 and withdraw $50,000 at the beginning of every year—5% of their original balance. Both face three −20% years and seventeen +7% years. Only their order differs.

ⓘ What is sequence-of-returns risk?
Withdrawals during early investment losses remove shares that cannot participate in later recoveries. The same average return or even exactly the same annual returns can lead to different retirement outcomes when the sequence changes.
ⓘ What does 'guaranteed income base doubles' mean?
Some variable-annuity living-benefit riders use a hypothetical income benefit base that may increase or double after a defined deferral period. This is only a mathematical base for calculating contract withdrawals—not the invested account value or an inheritable lump sum. Rates, rider terms, insurer strength and eligibility are essential.
The alternative worth examining: protect a minimum income floor
A separate hypothetical variable-annuity rider begins payments when the initial income bridge ends.
Maintain a liquid, diversified investment portfolio for spending above the protected income floor and potential inheritance.
What if the market stumbles as you start withdrawals?
Household spending less dependable outside income.
Outside income plus conditional income bridge / future rider.
Assets not allocated to the hypothetical two annuity contracts.
How would you divide the starting capital?
| Capital destination | Modeled amount | Purpose and trade-off |
|---|
What do these choices do to sequence risk?
| Measure | Unprotected portfolio | Illustrative protected income floor |
|---|
The protected income floor covers a portion of spending from contract payments; the remaining diversified portfolio supplies only the gap above that floor. This can lower required annual withdrawals from liquid market assets, but the annuity premiums reduce the remaining invested principal and may reduce liquidity or inheritance.
Where do your income and inheritance stand at the horizon?
| Scenario | Years with portfolio income shortfall | Projected liquid portfolio at horizon | Variable-annuity account value | Illustrative pre-tax legacy |
|---|
These are simplified deterministic assumptions, not a guarantee of market performance or annuity death benefits. The guaranteed income calculation base is never included in the estimated inheritance.
