Is your investment portfolio paying more in taxes than it needs to?

Practical Example

MEET PAPA JOE / A FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

Timing matters. Deferring tax is not erasing it.

Papa Joe asks whether keeping deferred tax dollars working for a time could help, after accounting for added costs and eventual repayment.

THE STARTING POINT

Pay assumed $2,500 tax now.

THE POSSIBILITY TO TEST

Defer that $2,500 for ten years; repay it in full at the end.

ILLUSTRATIVE POTENTIAL / TEN YEARS$900

Potential net deferral timing benefit

Tax deferral, not tax forgiveness. This is one hypothetical comparison, not a promised improvement.

See the napkin math and what could change the outcome

The assumptions

Reinvest $2,500 deferred tax at 4% net. Subtract $25 year-end added annual cost compounded at 4% and repay the full $2,500 in year 10.

The trade-offs

Requires eligible gains, losses and basis; replacement restrictions and all accounts must be reviewed. No higher permanent tax savings assumed. Alternative to tax-drag example; never add both.

Where you own investments can matter as much as what you own.

01 · LocateAre assets in tax-smart places?

Could taxable bonds fit better in IRAs while growth sits in taxable or Roth accounts?

02 · ManageAre taxes managed year-round?

Harvest actual losses, manage realized gains and watch capital-gains concentration.

03 · CompareWhat is the after-tax result?

Test munis, deferral and fees without calling delayed taxes permanent savings.

ⓘ Why does asset location matter?

Interest from taxable bonds or CDs is generally taxed as ordinary income in taxable accounts; qualified dividends and long-term gains may have different federal rates. IRAs defer current income; qualified Roth withdrawals may be tax-free. Asset selection and account access still matter.

ⓘ Can dividend reinvestment avoid taxes?

No. Reinvested taxable dividends generally remain taxable in the year received; reinvestment creates additional cost-basis lots. Taking dividends in cash can simplify rebalancing, but it doesn't automatically lower current taxes.

Could your existing allocation be working harder after tax?

Start with balances in the three main account types and the biggest taxable holdings. Use estimated market values—not individual stock positions.

ⓘ Why the cost-basis question is important

If you already have unrealized gains, shifting money between accounts may trigger gains taxes that outweigh the annual savings. This X-Ray won't assume a repositioning is free. An advisor should review actual tax lots before trading.

Deeper portfolio review — adjust allocation, yields, tax lots and strategy scenarios

The percentages below describe your IRA and Roth mix without asking for specific securities. They do not change your current aggregate allocation when testing simple location swaps.

Tax-loss harvesting and direct indexing

Separate ideas: municipal income and deferral

ⓘ Important: wash sales, capital-loss carryforwards and basis

Loss deductions are restricted by wash-sale rules, substantially identical replacements and other limitations. Direct indexing is not guaranteed. When a loss offsets gains today, replacing a holding generally changes future basis and can increase a later taxable gain. The modeled benefit is current-year tax timing, not permanent additional wealth.

ⓘ CDs versus nonqualified fixed annuities

CD interest is generally taxable annually. A nonqualified annuity can defer tax on earnings, but distributions of gains are generally taxed at ordinary rates; surrender conditions, issuer strength, insurance features, liquidity and taxation affect suitability. A tax-deferred annuity in an IRA generally does not add further tax deferral.

Important: The calculator only tests swaps that preserve the overall bond and stock mix. Real reallocations require holdings, tax-lot, and plan-access review first.
